What started out as a beautiful day just went south.
But before I rant, please take time to read this post over at Pondering Penguin. Karen writes so thoughtfully about Elizabeth Edwards and the recent announcement of her recurrence of cancer.
Cancer is such a hideous disease, isn't it. Vicki wrote recently of a young woman just turning 20, who is faced with needing a bone marrow transplant because of leukemia, and undergoing harvesting of eggs for future use because in all probability she would not be able to conceive after all the treatments. That's not what a 20 year old should be facing.
In our church, there is a gentleman who has just turned 70, who is battling cancer, and he's not winning. It started out in his tongue, is now in his throat, practically strangling him, and there isn't much left to be done. He and his wife have a daughter who is developmentally delayed, nearing 50 years of age, and that burden is heavy. Yes, arrangements are made, but the worry is still there.
But then there is Ben, who survived his ordeal this last year, and Anthony, who, so far, is doing well after his bone marrow transplant. While there's breath there's hope, n'est-ce pas.

Spring training is almost over. I smiled when I read B.C. this morning.
I have a ticket for one more game this week, and then the boys of summer will be headed north to begin the regular season of baseball. The month of spring training is all too short. Along with the boys going north, will be many of the snowbirds who migrate back to their homes in the north. Some of them will be missed; some won't. Our roads will be less crowded, but the restaurants and businesses who depend on tourism will be wishing they were still here.
When my daughter was getting ready for college, we went to North Carolina to finish her registration for fall. We traveled back to Florida on Saturday, April 1. I'm so glad we were coming south. Going north on I-75 was a steady stream of cars, RV's, campers, boats. If I hadn't seen it with my own eyes, I would have never believed it. It was as though the state was being evacuated, and in a way, it was. The kids and I wished them all a good trip. That migration will soon be taking place again.

Now for my RANT. For those of us who live in Florida, homeowner's insurance is a touchy subject. I remember crying when our premium doubled to $600.00. That was many years ago.
The Allst*te pulled out of our area, saying that we were high risk, and some company took over. They got their increase, pulled out, and so on and so on. Last year I paid $2500, and I complained. My premium this year? With yet another company...$4138.00. I submitted a payment of over $1000. Just one little mistake...I left off the fifty cents after the decimal point. So today I get a notice of cancellation if they don't have their fifty cents before April 4. I'm going to pay whatever postage it takes to send it in pennies. That just makes me SO MAD.

Don't get me started on insurance companies and their techniques to drain our wallets. I feel the same as you.
Thanks for the sweet shoutout about my post on the Edwards. I appreciate the feedback.
I know too many people who have gone through similar troubles, and I sympathize.
Were I you, I would scream for a while, and then get busy writing letters to the newpapers, the TV news people and anyone else who will listen.
The cost of your homeowner's insurance is absurd! Goodness, I thought ours was bad here in California, and we live right in the middle of earthquake country. We pay just over $600 per year for our home!
That is unbelievable... I wonder if it is as bad along the gulf in Mississippi.
I am so glad to hear that Ben and Anthony are doing so well.... many prayers for them and continued best wishes.
I have 50 cents if you need to borrow it, Beverly. I love the old friends and new below. I would be honored to join your list of new friends!
Beverly
Let's hope Gov.Crist will DO something about the high cost of homeowners insurance here. Ours isnt nearly as high as yours, only $1850, but like you it's doubled since the decade of storms is upon us. We even went out and purchased seperate flood insurance because of how bad the people in MS & LA were treated after Katrina.
Cancer is a difficult process. Being a survivor myself I do understand. I will keep your fellow parishner in my prayers.
I pay only $396 a year? Just come on up to Georgia we'll try and make room! I'm like you Beverly that Ins. Co is unrealistic, and greedy ! I'm glad Uncle Sonny has helped out our senoirs in GA. Blessings. Ron.
I'm going to throw in my two cents worth... I'm Beverly's daughter and my homeowners has gone from almost $900 to $2400 this past year due to the ins co's pulling out. I'm now with Citizens since no company will insure my home that is over 50 years old. Then on top of it I have to carry Flood ins due to a creek near where I live... nice incentive to leave the state.
The things done over .50. I am so sorry that happened to you. Things just continue to go up. I remember when gas was .25 a gallon.
Sorry about your friend with cancer. I guess all our infirmities are the result of sin in the world. connie from Texas
Your homeowners is like individual health insurance for construction contractors. Un-affordable.
I'd tape 50 pennies to a card and send it overnight. I know that costs about 10 dollars to send it that way, but I'd like to watch them pry those pennies loose.
I went to a UT baseball game Sunday against Georgia. Fun, but I don't like the aluminum bat sound. I got a little sunburn and thought of you and Peg down there.
Just another week till heaven-in-front-of-a-tv starts!
Oh my gosh.. that is an outrageous amount to have to pay for home insurance. And for them to harp on a measly 50 cents. Wouldn't you just love to be able to tell them to stick it.
I hate the "C" word...I wish there was a cure!
My aunt lives in FL and if she had a blog I'm sure she would rant too!
I hope you find cheaper insurance!
