When I saw Carmi's theme yesterday, I hurriedly posted a photo from my days in Haiti that showed my traveling on a motorbike. I looked back through my files from Haiti and found these photos that also fit the theme. The truck seen above is very typical of public transportation in Haiti. There's no assigned seating. If you don't fit inside, you can go on top with the chickens and other livestock being transported.
Traveling by horseback, mule back, or more often on a donkey is very common. On market days, the "marchandes" (sales ladies) can be seen going to market on the back of the donkey which is also laden with baskets filled with goods to sell. I shared in one blogpost how, one day, when Jackie and I had gone to the airport (cow pasture) on my motorbike to greet some people flying in to visit, that on the way back, we sideswiped a donkey on the way back to town. My side mirror caught on one of the handles of the basket that was on the donkey. We were riding on a dirt road that had become heavily rutted from the rains. We were in a rut and couldn't just move over. I obviously thought that we had room to get by. Fortunately, we were none the worse for the wear.

I have frequently carried things on my head (for short distances) but there'll be NO walking barefoot on rocky terrain!! Great old photos, Beverly.
great post, bev, i prefer donkeys or mules to motor bikes. and I don't think I could carry those baskets on my head at all. fits travel thing perfectly.
What wonderful old photos! I notice the sad little village of houses behind you on the motorbike. I'm supposing these women don't get awful headaches because they started as young girls?
Neat pics which I'm sure bring back vivid memories of your time there.
It truly is a completely different world there, isn't it? It looks very beautiful, and I know it is also very poor.
Thanks for sharing.
You didn't say what happened to the donkey once you sideswiped it!
it is hard for me to imagine a place as close as hati to the usa that is so primative...my mission was to england and the most i had to deal with was the toliet water above my head when i flushed
I've always wondered how a country could be so poor for so long. I wonder if they'll ever be able to overcome all their issues?
Beautiful scenery - ouch for the bare feet!
Somehow the palour of old photos seems to suit the nostalgia.
What a life experience your time in Haiti must have been. Love the photos. Very different travel styles from what we are used to. I kind of like the donkey one. And I love the mental image of you tearing across a cow pasture on a motor bike. :-)
