Welcome Home

Bradenton became my home when I was four. My parents moved there after World War II ended to begin a new life after having lived in Lacoochee for several years. Since we were away from family, we took trips back to Lacoochee and Trilby to visit my father's parents and to Starke to visit my mother's parents. My mother and daddy had a '36 Chevrolet in that fashionable color of black. There were no interstates, and to a four-year-old, those trips seemed like an eternity.

Whenever we returned the trip, this sign was a welcome sight. It meant that we were home. This sign is now in our South Florida Museum...not the original sign, but a replica...a sweet reminder.

Carmi's theme this week is "signs." You can join in or see other signs at his site.

Do you ever think that the auto industry would have been better off to focus on no more than five or six different models of cars and on making them more fuel efficient than on all the colors and accessories and add-ons? Options on Hondas are not that varied... pretty much three levels and that's it.

I remember we had a black 57 Chevy... really should have kept that car.. it is one of the more sought after classics now.. And yes, those trips on back roads lasted forever!

Looking forward to seeing you Saturday!

Cool! I bet you feel as if you're 4 years old again, sitting in the back of your car (no car seats back then) bouncing up and down "are we home yet?"
Wonderful memories.

They don't make signs like that anymore. We have a sign welcoming us to Tampa, but it has no personality at all.

These days, the problem is vandalism, so many cities no longer have them.

Nice to reminisce. I too, remember long log car trips - Mom and Dad had to have the patience of saints!

That is a very cool sign Bev. A jolt of nostalgia, huh?

Laughing at Ella in the post below. My brother designed neon signs for a while so he has some great ones. This one for Bradenton is very cool- especially the jumping fish.

Back in Florida next week- maybe we can finally have lunch!

That's a cool sign.
To a kid, traveling by car DOES seem like an eternity.
Nowadays, families have TVs in their SUVs and vans for kids to watch on those long drives. With those, I'm sure there's not so much "Are we there yet?:" being asked every ten minutes.
