I have often driven I-95 on my to David's and have passed by the exits for Savannah, and I always said to myself that I must go there some day. The last week of April, I went with a group of seniors (as in old people) to Savannah. Our bus dropped us off on River Street for "shopping and lunch." I connected with one of the ladies on the bus who was no more interested in shopping than I was, and so we asked the best way to see the most in the time that we had.
He suggested that we go up the elevator to Bull Street and head west. That led us down several squares that are lined with the most magnificent live oaks that I believe I've ever seen. Almost as abundant as live oaks were church steeples. As we walked down the squares we stopped to read the many monuments to people who were important in the founding of Georgia from Oglethorpe to the soldiers who helped fight for independence.
As we walked along, we were serenaded by street musicians, one a violinist and this gentleman who was playing gospel songs on his flute. What a lovely stop along the way. I decided that if I ever move to Savannah, I will be a bench sitter, especially in the spring time.
This would be a lovely way to see the historic part of the city. We saw several horse-drawn buggies and lots of open-air trams filled with sight-seers. We enjoyed walking so that we could stop at will and snap photos or take the time to read the historic markers.
Our day ended at "The Lady and Sons," Paula
Deen's restaurant. Our tour guide had made these reservations for us, and we were given a room downstairs. The gentleman who greeted us didn't tell us who he was, but we later found out he is Bobby's son, Paula's grandson. We were served some good Southern cooking. If you went away hungry, it was no one's fault but your own.
I'll post some more photos tomorrow of some of the houses in Savannah and more of Paula's.

The first picture of the tree is lovely, the way you have the black branches standing out. That picture of The Lady And Sons fascinates me. I think I've seen photos of it on T.V., but in your photo one thing sticks out. The very small sign and the building. You could pass it right by and not even know it. Now you would think a star's restaraunt would be more showy, but of course they don't need that for business any more.

great job of telling the story and i am waiting to see which houses you show us. i was born and raised in Savannah and left there for here 26 years ago. the down town is beautiful and the older homes are beyond priceless. i am so glad they are preserving them. i do hope you went in some of he older homes that are open to the public. i loved all of them and spent many happy hours looking through and at them.

The first photo with the trees looks just as I've pictured Savannah, ever since I read that book...the title of which escapes me, now! Oh, well...Bruce will know.
You made the right decision. On my first trip to the Dominican Republic, I did go shopping with other members of the tour group, on our last afternoon. On subsequent tours, I used that time to starting packing for home, and maybe to rest.
A meal at Paula Deen's.... my mom would be in "hog heaven".. she loves her cookbooks!
I love Savannah. We stayed at Tybee Island a few years ago.
