I attended a Good Friday service this evening. It used to be that these services were at noon on Friday, and businesses closed or let employees off to attend. Some still do; that is, allow people to attend services during the day, but many churches have gone to an evening service.

There was no preaching tonight, simply the contemplation of God's love pouring out for us, sinners as we are. We sang a couple of contemporary songs, but most were the old hymns that I learned as a child. I love to be able to sing without having to look at the words. The song below is one that we sang. I found the words here, and in reading the verses, found a couple that I have never seen in a hymn book.

Beneath the cross of Jesus I fain would take my stand,
The shadow of a mighty rock within a weary land;
A home within the wilderness, a rest upon the way,
From the burning of the noontide heat, and the burden of the day.

O safe and happy shelter, O refuge tried and sweet,
O trysting place where Heaven’s love and Heaven’s justice meet!
As to the holy patriarch that wondrous dream was given,
So seems my Savior’s cross to me, a ladder up to heaven.

There lies beneath its shadow but on the further side
The darkness of an awful grave that gapes both deep and wide
And there between us stands the cross two arms outstretched to save
A watchman set to guard the way from that eternal grave.

Upon that cross of Jesus mine eye at times can see
The very dying form of One Who suffered there for me;
And from my stricken heart with tears ,two wonders I confess;
The wonders of redeeming love and my unworthiness.

I take, O cross, thy shadow for my abiding place;
I ask no other sunshine than the sunshine of His face;
Content to let the world go by - to know no gain or loss,
My sinful self my only shame, my glory all the cross.

I read today in several posts "It's Friday, but Sunday's coming." Hallelujah!

We must have sung 3 verses of 10 songs tonight at our service..with scripture in between and VERY dark, only candles, and Pastor SLAMMED a HUGE bible shut in commemoration of the stone being put in front of the tomb..very beautiful.
We're listening to an Oratorio that has the melody of O SACRED HEAD NOW WOUNDED as a recurring theme...amazing.
great service tonight...I'm glad you enjoyed yours, too!
"see you on Easter!" xx

This year in BSF we are doing the life of Moses... and the detail on the curtains of the tabernacle that separated the people from the "Holy of Holies" was amazing... it was dense and thick and heavy and when Jesus paid the final price for our sin.. that curtain was torn in two as if it were a piece of tissue paper. No longer separated from God, we can communicate with Him freely and Jesus is right there with Him as our advocate.

You are so right.. it was Friday but Sunday is coming.... I know we don't deserve God's mercy but I am so glad He looks beyond my faults and sees my need.

Have a blessed Easter...

Love this hymn, Beverly, especially the last two verses. I recall hearing Elisabeth Elliot talking about this one as an example of why one should memorize the old hymns--what an abundance of Scriptural truth they contain!

Happy Easter!

Beverly, you were quick on my post. I was actually doing a little editing (minor) when you commented. Yes we have been very busy this week and at least I've finally been feeling better and enjoyed it immensely.]
Thanks for the very real part of Easter you shared!

I get so worried our school district will take Good Friday off of our vacation day calendar. We've become so culturally diverse that we're losing our own culture: America founded on God in whom we trust.

I love these holy days, I love how you said it was just a quiet time to reflect. So meaningful.
